This photograph was in the possession of Dr. Kunihiko Yoshida, an elderly emeritus physician based at Japan’s University of Kagoshima in May of 2015. He attended the international videoconference convened by the chiefs of the ill-fated clinical trial at Oak Ridge, a last-ditch attempt to decipher the nightmarish psychosis devouring the minds of Pablo and his fellow soldiers. Dr. Yoshida became the first to link the voracious madness in 2015 with a prior epidemic he had noted decades before in Japan. At the core of the doctor’s insight was this poignant photo of an unidentified mother and child, linked to a tragic history – and, to his shock, to Tim’s own family history, along with the fearsome omens calling out through time from the grisly stone tablet among his heirlooms.
